The early coal mines in the Mead area transported coal to market via the Stone Coal Sub-Division, a branch line railroad jointly operated by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and the Virginian Railway.

1920: C. H. Mead Coal Company, No. 1 mine; 34,665 tons produced

1917-27: Wood Sullivan C. Co., Vanwood mine
