The Meadow River takes its name from the Big Meadows, the region of glades and meadows in which it sources. The Meadow River WMA protects much of the ecosystem in the river's upper reaches. In its lower run, the Meadow River is a popular kayaking stream and its cliff-lined canyon is a popular rock-climbing area. The Meadow sources in northwestern Summers County on the NE flank of Keeney Mountain. Its mouth is on the Gauley River, below Summersville Dam, in southern Nicholas County.
