The Meadow River takes its name from an area of glades, meadows, and wetlands near its source, known regionally as the Big Meadows. The Meadow River Wildlife Management Area protects much of the ecosystem in the river's upper reaches. In its lower run, the Meadow River is a popular kayaking stream and its cliff-lined canyon is a popular rock-climbing area.
