A community in Marion County, Monongah, WV, was incorporated in 1891. Name abbreviated from Monongahela, the name of the river formed by the junction of the West Fork River and Tygart River a few miles north of the town. On December 6, 1907, 361 miners died when the Consolidated Coal Company mine at Monongah exploded -- one of the worst mining disasters in U.S. history.
