Monroe County

Created from Greenbrier County in 1799, and named for James Monroe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Monroe), fifth President of the United States. Monroe County was visited by white "explorers" as early as 1760. John Alderson and William Morris visited the county about 1777, and Christian Peters came to the area of present-day Peterstown in 1783.
