The county seat of Monongalia County, Morgantown, WV, was founded 1766-1768 by Colonel Zackquill Morgan, son of Morgan Morgan, on site of settlement established in 1768 by Thomas Decker, who was killed by Native Americans. The first pottery west of the Appalachians, was believed to have started in Morgantown in about 1785. Morgantown was incorporated in 1785 by act of the General Assembly of Virginia. and reincorporated as a city in 1901, annexing the towns of Seneca, Greenmont and South Morgantown.

WAJR the first radio station in Morgantown began broadcasting in 1940. Metronews, the state's news network, went on the air from WAJR-AM in Morgantown via 35 affiliated stations in 1985.

Mountaineer Football

On November 28, 1891, West Virginia University was defeated 72-0 by Washington and Jefferson College of Washington, PA, in the first recorded football game by WVU in Morgantown. WVU's Mountaineer Field was dedicated on Nov. 14, 1927 in Morgantown before a football game against Penn State. John Denver helped dedicate the new Mountaineer Field with a performance of "Country Roads" in 1980.
