Mountain State University maintains a small campus in downtown Beckley through which it offers professioal programs in business and technology, health and human services, arts and sciences, and graduate studies.

MSU was founded in 1933 as Beckley College, serving students who, because of the Depression and the region's poor roads, were unable to attend other regional institutions. In the 1990s the school was accredited as a four-year college and then a master's level institution and renamed as The College of West Virginia. It was renamed Mountain State University in August 2001. Annual enrollment is more than 6,000.
