North Fork Shale

The fossiliferous North Fork Shale, outcrops along the central and southern New River Gorge in a 15-foot-thick bed. The shale is described by the West Virginia Geological Survey as black with streaks of limestone and sandstone and containing marine fossils, and in the region of Mann's Creek, abundant crinoid fossils.
