A community in Fayette County, Pax, WV, on Interstate 77 (I-77), was incorporated in 1920 and named for Pack's Branch, a tributary of Paint Creek. Pack's Branch, in turn, was named for a family hunters named "Pack" who camped near the present location of the town.
Pax is situated approximately five-miles northwest of Beckley, WV and 10 miles west of the New River Gorge National River. As a result, and thanks to its interstate-expressway access, the largely residential community of Pax stands to see an increase in commerce associated with tourism. A scenic biking and biking trail has been established along Paint Creek, which is also an popular trout stream. The Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area, one of the West Virginia's most popular public hunting and fishing areas, is located near Pax.
