Petersburg, West Virginia

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

The county seat of Grant County, Petersburg, WV was not incorporated until 1920. Originally settled in 1745 by German colonists, Petersburg was named for Jacob Peterson, owner of the first general store in the area. The town's name changed to Lunice Creek in 1833 because a post office named Petersburg was already in existence in Virginia. After West Virginia achieved statehood, the community's name was changed back to Petersburg.
