Pineville, West Virginia
|
The county seat of Wyoming County, Pineville,WV, was platted in 1893, incorporated in 1907, and chartered in 1917. Pineville is so named because of the location of the original site, when selected, of a black- or pitch-pine second-growth forest. By the late 1920s, Pineville had one bank, a weekly newspaper, three churches, a courthouse, and a school building; and the city maintained a bathing beach and a park surrounding Castle Rock, the monumental sandstone formation that rises near the center of the town. A statue of Rev. W. H. H. Cook, soldier, statesman, and minister, stands in front of the courthouse.
