Pineville Sandstone

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

Widely persistent in cliffs and ledges to the north and east of the New River Gorge, the Pineville Sandstone is perhaps best known for its sheer outcrops on the upper canyon of the Meadow River between the mouth of Burdette Creek toward Rainelle, WV. The Pineville also helps form much of the tableland region of eastern Fayette County and Raleigh County. The West Virginia Geological Survey describes the sandstone as "heavy- to current-bedded, medium-grained, micaceous to quartzitic, gray to grayish-white,...ranging in thickness from 40 to 75 feet." The bed takes its name from an outcropping in Pineville, WV.
