Plowshares Rapids

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

This Class II rapid, also known as Ploughshares Rapids, is located on the upper Upper New River Gorge whitewater rafting segment, just less than a mile-and-a-half downstream of Surprise Rapids. It is the last major rapid on the upper segment, and the upper-segment take-out. The rapids are likely caused by colluvium tumbled down from the flanks of the gorge. The ruins of the ghost town of Sewell and associated communities are located on river-right near, and downstream of, the rapids.
