On the north bank of the Kanawha River in Putnam County, Poca (map) (http://www.wvamaps.com/maps/index.php?place=Poca&state=WV&pop=1013&county=Putnam&lat=38.4722&lon=-81.8144&elev=600) derives its name from Pocatalico River, a major tributary of the Kanawha. The word Pocatalico may be an Indian term that means "land of the fat doe." The Pocatalico River empties into the Kanawha River at Poca. Poca High School's mascot is the "dot," a punning name derived from the "polka dot" pattern and the similar sounding American name.
