Pocahontas No. 3 Coal

The Pocahontas No. 3 Coal is among the most important seams in southern West Virginia but outcrops in minable dimensions only in the southern New River Gorge near the common border of Fayette County and Summers County. Further southwest in Mercer County and McDowell County, the seam reaches of thickness of more than 10 feet and has been heavily mined. As do all the Pocahontas Coal Seams, the No. 3 takes its name from its bed at Pocahontas, VA.
