Pocahontas Sandstone

The Pocahontas Sandstone is divided into upper and lower beds, though only the Upper Pocahontas Sandstone is present in the New River Gorge region. This sandstone is not a prominent cliff-rock and is of little commercial value in the gorge. The Pocahontas No. 3 "Rider" Coal is sometimes present in this seam to the southwest in Wyoming County and McDowell County.
