Powell Mountain
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
Powell Mountain, in northern Nicholas County, in central West Virginia, rises to 2,417 feet along U.S. Route 19 north of Summersville, WV. The mountain forms the divide between the drainages of the Gauley River, to the south, and the Elk River to the north. Strata exposed along the eastern face of the mountain by the construction of US-19 attracts geologists and geology students from local universities. A scenic overlook and picnic area near the summit provides views of the strata and the valley of Powell's Creek, which descends to meet the Birch River at the foot of the mountain.
