View of Potomac River from Prospect Rock

Prospect Rock, also known as Cacapon Rock, caps a knob on the northern end of Cacapon Mountain within the bounds of Cacapon Resort State Park in Morgan County. The rock, composed of Oriskany Sandstone, may be reached by a hiking trail and provides a spectacular view of the Potomac River valley. An observation area along W.Va. Route 9 approximately three miles west of Berkley Springs, WV, affords much the same view.

George Washington often visited the formation to enjoy the westward panorama. According to the W.Va. Division of Culture & History, the Museum of Natural History in New York has ranked the view the fifth finest in the U.S. and National Geographic Magazine once entitled it the "Switzerland View of America."
