Roane County
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
Created in 1856 from parts of Kanawha, Jackson and Gilmer counties, Roane was named in honor of Judge Spencer Roane, a distinguished judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, whose wife Anne, was the daughter of Patrick Henry. Though largely rural, much of Roane is less than an hour's drive northwest of the Charleston, WV, metropolitan area. I-79 courses through the southern county.
