County seat of Hampshire County. Claimed to be the oldest town in the state, Romney, WV, was chartered in 1762. It was established at the site of Fort Pearsoll, built in 1758 for defense against the Indians. Romney was named by Lord Fairfax for the Town of Romney, one of the Cinque Forts along the coasts of southern England. The West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind is located here.
