Salem College was charted in 1888, founded by Salem residents and the Seventh Day Baptist Church, though never sectarian in its teaching or administration. Between 1989 and 2001 Salem partnered with Teikyo University Foundation in Japan and became Salem-Teikyo University. In 2000, its name was changed to Salem International University.
