Saltwell Ridge rises along New River near Shanklin's Ferry
Saltwell Ridge is a mountain mass in southern
Summers County and eastern
Mercer County that takes its name from the
Mercer Saltworks, which operated beneath its eastern flank along
New River through the early 1800s. The valley of Lick Creek drains the southern flank of the river; the valley of Island Creek drains the northern flank. Both streams are westward flowing tributaries of the New River. Access to Saltwell Ridge has been limited since
Bluestone Lake was created, inundated low lying areas around its eastern flanks. The ridge today may best be known as the mountain wall rising opposite the Shanklin's Ferry Campground and Sherman Ballard Recreation Area in the
Bluestone Lake WMA.
