Sand Fork, WV is a community located in Gilmer County. The name of the town is Layopolis; name of post office, Sand Fork. The town was incorporated in 1903 as Layopolis, after William R. Lay, an employee of the Eureka Pipe Line Company, operating at that time in the oil fields of Gilmer County. The post office was named Sand Fork after the creek on which the town is located, which derived its name on account the numerous sandy bars found in early time along the course of the stream.
