In northern Summers County 10 miles north of Hinton, WV, Sandstone (map) is an unincorporated community located along the New River in northern Summers County. Sandstone may be best known today as an exit on Interstate 64. W.Va. Route 20 and I-64 interchange at Sandstone. The Sandstone Visitor Center for the New River Gorge National River is located at Sandstone. Sandstone Falls is located just south of the community. The "West Virginia Stone" used in the Washington Monument was taken from a quarry near Sandstone. The two-by-four-foot block was received in Washington, D.C., on February 2, 1885.
