A community in the Kanawha Valley in northwestern Fayette County, Smithers, WV, was incorporated in 1936. The town was named for James Smithers, an early settler who resided at the mouth of what is now known as Smithers Creek, a tributary of the Kanawha River. Smithers is located on scenic highway US-60, just upstream of and opposite the Kanawha River city of Montgomery, WV.
