Snowshoe Mountain, near Marlinton, WV, in Pocahontas County, is a popular term for the mountainous mass where the southern end of Cheat Mountain converges with that of Back Allegheny Mountain. The mountain has been so-called since the creation of the Snowshoe Mountain resort and ski area in the 1970s. Snowshoe Mountain has not yet been categorized as an independent geographic feature. The mountain may best be represented as approaching the summit at Thorny Flat near the junction of Cheat and Back-Allegheny. Crested with the roofs of Snowshoe Mountain Village, at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, the mountain can be seen from many miles distant. At night, the lights atop the mountain glitter above the otherwise-dark masses of other mountains with the Monongahela National Forest.
