He was king of the 1970s pie-throwing craze on TV programs and the last great practitioner of the art -- comedian Soupy Sales, born in Huntington, WV, in Cabell County, claimed to have been hit in the face with 25,000 pies in the course of his career. In 1964 he jokingly told his young audience to take "those green pieces of paper with pictures of... Washington,... Franklin,... Lincoln, and Jefferson from their parents' wallets" and asked that they send them to him. In return, he promised to send them a postcard from Puerto Rico. Several younger viewers didn't get the joke and sent money, and Sales was suspended from television for a week, but the incident made Soupy Sales "cool." He is the father of musicians Hunt Sales and Tony Fox Sales, who have performed in bands with contemporary musicians Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Todd Rundgren.
