Summers County
Formed in 1871 from parts of Monroe, Mercer, Fayette, and Greenbrier counties, Summers County was named in honor of George W. Summers, a prominent jurist of Kanawha County. The first Europeans to visit the county may have been members of Walker's Expedition, which may have reached the mouth of the Greenbrier River on the New River at present-day Hinton, WV, in 1751. Though traditionally an agricultural setting prior to the arrival of Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O) in 1871, the county became increasingly reliant on tourism in recent years. Thousands of travelers tour its state and national park areas annually. The county's most popular tourist attractions include Bluestone Lake, Pipestem State Park, Bluestone State Park, and Sandstone Falls, part of the New River Gorge National River.
