County seat of Nicholas County, Summersville, WV, was originally estabished in 1824, but was not incorporated until 1850 after the establishment of the Weston and Gauley Bridge Turnpike. The town was named in honor of Judge Lewis Summers, who introduced the bill in the Virginia Assembly creating Nicholas County. At Summersville Nancy Hart, a Confederate spy, was briefly held prisoner by Union forces, prior to her daring escape. West Virginia's largest lake, Summersville Lake, is located just south of the town.
