The mine at Terry was located along the C&O Railway's Terry Sub-Division. This branch was said to be completed in 1907, however the mine at Terry showed production during 1904.

State mining records indicate the Terry mine was operated by Stonewall Coal & Coke Co. between 1904-1917; Cook & Carter Coal Co from 1918-1925; The Terry Coal Co. Inc. from 1925-1928; and C. A. Brockman Inc. during 1933-1935. A 1906 C&O publication list the Terry mine as being operated by the Stonewall Coal & Coke Company, a post office address at McCreery.

Terry is among the few communities still inhabited in the New River Gorge. The community is located in Raleigh County just south of the border of Fayette County.
