In northern Summers County near Brooks, approximately five miles north of Hinton, WV, the Three Rivers Avian Center is a 102 acre facility established to provide veterinary and rehabilitative care for wild birds. Between 1990 and 2010 the center provide care for more than 1,500 injured birds of 39 species and maintained a release rate of more than 49 percent, according to Wendy Perrone, its executive director. On-site staff, a statewide support crew, and a network of 25 hospice veterinarians help provide emergency care, hospitalization, and physical therapy within a few hours notification. The center also helps provide statistical information on native avian populations and facilitates public outreach educational programs, including programs that include its live non-releasable birds. The private, non-profit center offers on-site programs by appointment.
