Upper Falls of Coal River
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
The Upper Falls of the Coal River, in Kanawha County, 1.5 miles southwest of St. Albans, drop 15 feet over a series of sandstone shelves and lends its name to the community of Upper Falls, WV, also known as "Tornado." An easily observable channel has been cut across the sandstone along the east bank of the river and is a remnant of a lock-and-dam system that existed on the lower Coal River until the U.S. Civil War.
