This Class III rapid is located on the Lower New River whitewater rafting segment at the upstream end of the railroad bridge over New River and approximately a half mile downstream of the river access point for the lower New River segment.

The rapid is divided into an upper and lower section. The upper rapid is formed by an alluvial gravel bar deposit, likely riding on a ledge of bedrock. The Lower Railroad Rapids is formed partly by alluvial debris deposited from Coal Run, on river-left.
