Welch Sandstone
From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia
Irregular in its occurrence in the New River Gorge region, the Welch Sandstone takes its name from an outcrop near Welch, WV, where the ledge is more pronounced. According to the West Virginia Geological Survey (WVGS) report of 1919, the "stone was used in construction of 124 beehive ovens at the Macdonald Mine of the New River Coal & Coke Co." Stone was quarried in ledge directly below the Sewell Coal. The WVGS describes the Welch Sandstone as more or less lenticular when found in the region.
