West Virginia State University, formerly West Virginia State College, is a historically black institution that is now a racially diverse school offering baccalaureate, associate, and graduate degrees eight miles northwest of Charleston, WV. Its 94-acre campus along the Kanawha River hosts approximately 5,000 students annually. The school was established by the West Virginia Legislature in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute. Its first building, A.B. Fleming Hall, named for the governor of West Virginia, opened in 1892 near the Cabbel Spring. Dr. Byrd Prillerman, a revolutionary black educator, served as president from 1909 to 1919.
