West Virginia University (WVU) was established in 1867 at Morgantown, WV, in Monongalia County, as a federal land-grant institution. The term "land grant" derives from the Congressional Act of 1862, which provided federally-owned land to each state to be sold for funds to found agricultural and engineering schools. The West Virginia University Department of Mining Engineering (http://www.mine.cemr.wvu.edu/) helped West Virginia become a leading producer of coal.

Today, the university offers 166 degree programs through 14 schools and colleges. Its enrollment for the fall 2004 semester was 23,753. The WVU football team, The Mountaineers, play in one of the nation’s finest football stadiums -- Mountaineer Field, now known as Milan Puskar Stadium, which holds more than 60,000 spectators.
