West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), formerly the West Virginia Institute of Technology, rises along the banks of the Kanawha River approximately 25 miles southeast of Charleston, WV. Tech's engineering program was ranked in the top 100 nationwide by U.S. News & World Report in 2005 and fourth among public comprehensive colleges in the South. Average annual enrollment is 2,500. Students also benefit from their proximity to the New River Gorge National River, a unit of the national park system renown for its hiking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting opportunities. The institution was first established as the Montgomery Preparatory School. WVU Tech is now an affiliate of West Virginia University at Morgantown, WV.
