Wheeling Suspension Bridge
The oldest suspension bridge still in operation in the world, its original span being completed on October 20, 1849. The first bridge to span the Ohio River, it was originally designed and built by Charles Ellet. The bridge has been called the father of modern American suspension bridges and is perhaps the most important antebellum civil engineering structure in North America.
