Williamson, West Virginia

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

The county seat of Mingo County, Williamson, WV was incorporated in 1905, and named for the founder, Wallace J. Williamson, who at one time owned most of the land upon which the city is located. At some point soon after the development of the Williamson Coal Field began, in the 1890's, Williamson began billing itself as "The Heart of the Billion Dollar Coalfield." At the turn of the Twentieth Century Williamson was tiny village, but by the mid-1920's had grown one of the major economic and industrial centers in the Southern West Virginia Coalfields.
