Winding Gulf was one of the earliest mining operations in the Winding Gulf Coal Field, opened by Justus Collins in 1909. Collins chartered the Winding Gulf Colliery Company on 9/16/1907.

Mines operated by the Winding Gulf Colliery during the year ending June 30, 1914 included the following:

Winding Gulf No. 1 was a drift mine working the Beckley seam, of 4' to 6' thickness. The mine produced about 600 tons of coal per day and employed 65 workers. Mining was done by machine and pick; haulage by elec. motors and mules. The No. 1 mine was located on a branch of Virginian Railway. George Wolfe was general manager.

Winding Gulf No. 2 was a shaft and slope mine working the Beckley seam, of 5' thickness. The mine produced about 800 tons daily and employed 139 workers. Mining was done by machine and pick; haulage by electric motors and mules. The mine tipple was located on branch of Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. George Wolfe was general manager.

Winding Gulf No. 3 was a slope mine working the Beckley seam of 5' thickness. The mine employed 20 workers. Mining was done electric machines and pick; haulage by elec. motor and mule. Coal delivered to the No. 1 tipple. George Wolfe was general manager.

Winding Gulf Colliery Company was chartered 9/16/1907 and was later consolidated into the Winding Gulf Collieries. On 2/29/1956, Winding Gulf Collieries merged with and into Winding Gulf Coals, Inc.
