Approaching the village of Winter, West Virginia (WV)
Winter, in eastern Putnam County, is an unincorporated community on the head of Harmon's Creek, a tributary of the Pocatalico River. The community may have been named for a postmaster surnamed "Winter" rather than wintry weather. Winter is located in the warmer lowlands of western West Virginia, rather than in the eastern uplands where most of the state's ski resorts are located. Winter may sometimes be confused with the ski resort Winterplace, a drive of more than an hour and a half south of the village of Winter near Ghent, WV, in Raleigh County.
