Map of 1903-04 showing Wright mines and coal lease lands of the Wright Coal & Coke Co.

Wright [Map] was located in the gorge of the Piney Creek, the primary tributary stream of the New River in Raleigh County. Coal was loaded from mines at Wright onto rail car on the Piney Creek Branch of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O), which was completed from Quinnimont to Raleigh, WV, in 1901. The community was located about 2.5 miles upstream of the mouth of Piney Creek at McCreery.

The Wright Coal & Coke Co. was organized in 1900 by J. Fred Effinger and others, with W. G. Caperton as general manager of the operation. State mining records indicate the Wright Coal & Coke Co. operated three mines, called Pack No. 2 and Wright Nos. 1 & 2, between 1901-1916. A C&O publication of 1906 listed Pack mine as being located 2.4 miles from Quinnimont, at a station named Pack. A station named Wright, located 3.3 miles from Quinnimont, served the Wright mine.

Rafter's Reference: the ruins of Wright are located on Piney Creek, outside the New River Gorge whitewater rafting area, though the creek is sometimes run by kayakers who put-in about five miles upstream of the site at the US-19 bridge over Piney Creek south of Beckley.
