Wyoming County Petroglyph

From West Virginia (WV) Cyclopedia

Officially, the Luther Elkins Petroglyph (46 Wm 3), this rock carving is also known as the "Lynco," "Lillyhaven," or Horse Creek Petroglyph. The site contains ancient rock carvings, or petroglyphs, of unknown age or purpose -- mostly likely made by Native Americans or their ancestors. The Wyoming County Petroglyphs are often cited by advocates of "fantastic" or cult-archaeology as evidence that Irish monks visited or resided in West Virginia prior to Columbus' "discovery" of America. The Council for West Virginia Archaeology maintains a Web page (http://cwva.org/controversy/ogham_intro.html) devoted to debunking this highly suspect theory.

Location: W.Va. 971 south of Oceana, WV, in Wyoming County
