Summers County is a primarily mountainous county in southern West Virginia. With the exception of narrow areas of level land along the courses of the New and Greenbrier rivers and their tributary streams, including the level areas near Hinton, WV, the county may best be defined by its mountains and mountain ranges. Despite the precipitous slopes descending from their heights, most mountains and mountain areas feature large areas of level uplands, as is typical of the Allegheny Mountains, the locally prominent subgroup of the Appalachian Mountains present in the county. The Alleghenies are frequently broad-topped, accommodating areas of relatively level land.
