The original counties of West Virginia
In 1863, the following counties, formerly parts of the Commonwealth of Virginia, formed the newly created State of West Virginia:
Barbour, Berkeley, Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pendleton, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming.
Between 1866 and 1895, six additional counties were created by acts of the legislature:
Mineral County, from Hampshire County; Grant County, from Hardy County; Lincoln County, from parts of Cabell, Putnam, Kanawha, and Boone Counties; Summers County, from parts of Greenbrier, Monroe, Mercer, and Fayette County; and Mingo County, from Logan County.
