Dewitt was developed as a company owned mining town in the 1910s by the Dewitt Fuel Company. The first coal shipments from the Dewitt coal plant occurred during the year ending June 30, 1916. Dewitt is located along [[Dunloup Creek]], a few miles from [[Thurmond, West Virginia|Thurmond]], in [[Fayette County]]. Dewitt is believed to have been named in honor of Dewitt Clinton Snyder, the father of the mine's owner, Thomas H. Snyder.
