The Cabin Creek Power Plant was one of the early commercial power plants built in West Virginia. The plant was built in 1914 by Virginia Electric Power, that company later became known as Appalachian Electric Power. Numerous power plants had been built throughout the [[New River Coal Field]] prior to 1914, however such plants supplied power for the mines and the mining towns. The first electrical plant employed for cutting and haulage in West Virginia was constructed at the coal mining operation at [[Erskine (historical)|Erskine]] in 1889 -- the second of its kind in the nation.
