Not far from the boundaries of present-day Ansted, in Fayette County, the earlier white explorers found extensive evidence of the workings of an outcropping of the Kanawha Black Flint stratum by Native Americans. According to local tradition, the area of the quarry was also said to be the site of a "camp", or village, occuppied by the Shawnee, prior to the arrival of the early white explorers and settlers (mid-1700's).
