Interstate 77 (I-77) runs roughly north-to-south through western and southern West Virginia. The northern third of the interstate courses through gentle hilly farmland. The central third routes through the metropolitan centers of the Kanawha Valley. The southern third meanders through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in the United States.

The southern portion of I-77 between Charleston, WV, and the West Virginia border, near Bluefield, WV, is a toll road, the West Virginia Turnpike. The high cost of construction and maintainence along this stretch of interstate has required that the state impose tolls. Use caution: the turnpike is one of the best segments of interstate in the United States, but it's also among the most winding.
